Full dentures or complete dentures are designed for patients who have lost all their teeth in the upper or lower jaw or both. They consist of a gum-coloured acrylic base that supports a full set of artificial teeth. Full dentures rest directly on the gums and are held in place through natural suction or with the help of denture adhesives.  

Partial dentures are ideal for patients who still have some healthy natural teeth. These dentures consist of a framework that holds replacement teeth, designed to fill in the gaps and prevent remaining teeth from shifting. The framework may comprise metal or acrylic and is secured using small clasps that attach to the existing teeth.

When you first start wearing dentures, your mouth will take some time before adjusting to having them in your mouth. The upper denture covers part of the palate, which can temporarily dull taste buds. However, your sense of taste usually adapts over time. Fortunately, as you get used to them and practice eating different foods, your brain compensates, and taste sensitivity improves.

Losing your teeth can cause facial muscles to sag, leading to a sunken appearance. Well-fitted dentures provide support to your cheeks and lips. By making your face look fuller, dentures can improve your appearance and make you look younger than your age.

Wearing your dentures 24/7 can lead to sore spots, infections, and even accelerated bone loss. So, giving them a break might be a good idea for your own benefit. At least remove them at night to allow your gums to rest and prevent irritation.

Your dentures need proper cleaning and brushing to last up to 5 to 10 years. However, they may need adjustments over time as your gums and jawbone naturally change. That is why routine dental visits are essential to maintaining a perfect fit.

Your dentist will perform a detailed oral examination, including X-rays or 3D CT scans, to assess the condition of your jawbone, gums, and any remaining teeth. If your jawbone lacks sufficient density, a bone graft may be recommended to strengthen it before implant placement. 

Treatment Planning

At this stage, the dentist will administer local anesthesia for sedation. Then, they insert small titanium posts into the jawbone at precise locations to act as artificial tooth roots. The number of implants varies depending on the type of denture. Typically, there are four to six implants per arch. After placement, the gums are stitched, and healing begins.  

Implant Placement Surgery

Over the next couple of months, a process called osseointegration occurs. During this time, the jawbone gradually fuses with the implants and creates a stable and secure foundation. Temporary dentures may be provided to maintain function and appearance while you heal.

Once the implants have fully integrated with the jawbone, the final step is attaching your permanent dentures. These dentures are custom-fit secured onto the implants using a snap-on or fixed system.
